In August 2011, a Field Museum team made up of two ornithologists, a mammalogist, and a photographer visited Gorongosa National Park in central Mozambique. Once there, they met up with Mozambiquan and Malawian scientists and students to survey the birds and mammals of the national park. They were invited there by the Carr Foundation, a private foundation that has partnered with the Mozambique government to help run the national park and implement programs to reintroduce large animals, fight poaching and forest encroachment, encourage tourism, and train guards.
