Description:
After the wood is removed, the remaining brush is burned away and the resulting fields are planted with beans, corn, and/or cassava. There remains high-quality forest on some very steep slopes, such as in the background of this photo, but this forest will likely be cut before too long. Photo © John Bates / The Field Museum.
